My thoughts while translating...

This is one of my favourite Malay songs of all time, “Dan Sebenarnya” by Yuna. It’s one of her earliest songs, I think, that brings her name up to Malaysia’s music industry and perhaps to other neighbouring countries’ music industry too. I was actually having a lot of fun translating this but also having some troubles too lol. Oh and this is an English translation of the Malay version of the song and not the English version. I think I need to explain this since I saw there’s an English version of the song.

One of those troubles that I mentioned is for the line “Yang masih bersemadi untuk mu”. My first thought when I read this line is that it means her feelings for him was being kept away for his sake. Or perhaps being reserved for him? Because my general understanding of the word ‘bersemadi’ or ‘semadi’ is ‘buried’ or ‘laid to rest’ or in other word ‘dying’. In my culture, it is common to say ‘moga roh bersemadi dengan aman’ as ‘may his/her soul rest in peace’. In other context, it can also mean ‘sleeping’ or ‘resting’. But then I thought that maybe my understanding of the word is too lacking so I searched its meaning in Kamus Dewan Bahasa’s website and I realized that yep my understanding really is lacking lol. According to the website, the word means ‘to meditate/ponder’ (which is of course not the meaning I was looking for) and another meaning for it is ‘to eternalize’, ‘to make something stays or doesn’t change’ or ‘to prevent something from disappearing’. So after that, I decided to go with ‘remain’. I think she meant that her feelings for him still remains, without changing or disappearing. Perhaps even after he ended up with someone else, since I understood this song as the persona realizing her feelings late. Well, at least that’s what I hope what she meant.

*Owh note that for every song that I translate, I based the gender of the persona/subject in the song according to the singer. For some songs the gender is not specified, so the person in question can be either male or female.
