Najwa Latif - Hilang English Translation
Lyrics by: Syafika Latif
Hilang / Missing
I lost myself
While I was chasing after you
I lost my life
For wanting to have your love
And I am missing, missing
From your love
From your life
From everything
From your love
From your life
From everything
That is yours
That is yours
I want you to know
And notice my existence
I want you
More than you know
And I am missing, missing
From your love
From your life
From everything
From your love
From your life
From everything
That is yours
That is yours
And maybe you will never ever notice me
And maybe you will never notice my existence
But I want you to know that I will love you
And I am missing, missing
From your love
From your life
From everything
From your love
From your life
From everything
From your love
From your life
From everything
From your love
From your life
From everything
That is yours
That is yours
That is yours
That is yours.
Original Malay lyrics
Aku hilang diriku
Sementara mengejar kamu
Aku hilang nyawaku
Kerna ku mahu cintamu
Dan aku hilang, hilang
Dari cintamu
Dari hidupmu
Dari segala-galanya
Dari cintamu
Dari hidupmu
Dari segala-galanya
Milikmu
Milikmu
Aku ingin kau tahu
Dan sedar akan kewujudanku
Aku inginkan kamu
Lebih dari yang kau tahu
Dan aku hilang, hilang
Dari cintamu
Dari hidupmu
Dari segala-galanya
Dari cintamu
Dari hidupmu
Dari segala-galanya
Milikmu
Milikmu
Dan mungkin kau takkan pernah sedari aku
Dan mungkin kau takkan sedar kewujudanku
Tapi ku ingin kau tahu ku akan mencintaimu
Dan aku hilang, hilang
Dari cintamu
Dari hidupmu
Dari segala-galanya
Dari cintamu
Dari hidupmu
Dari segala-galanya
Dari cintamu
Dari hidupmu
Dari segala-galanya
Dari cintamu
Dari hidupmu
Dari segala-galanya
Milikmu
Milikmu
Milikmu
Milikmu.

My 2 cents thoughts while translating...
“Hilang” is a song by a young and
promising singer-songwriter named Najwa Latif. Most of her songs(or is it all?)
were composed by her and the lyrics were written by her sister Syafika Latif.
For this song, the meaning from the lyrics alone is quite ambiguous because I
think that it could be meant for any type of love. From a crush/lover to parents’ love. Though the
official music video is definitely vying for the latter. The official mv
depicts a girl attempted to run away from home but then, she started to
reminisce precious moments she had with her family and decided to bail on her
initial plan. Judging from the lyrics, perhaps her parents seemed to be caught
up in their problems and conflicts that they consequently neglected their
child. So the child was desperate for their attention and love in which she
felt that her presence was missing or disappearing from her parents' life.
Though I know being a parent is
definitely hard work, I couldn't help thinking that the parents should know how
fragile a child's heart is. Especially when it involves their parents. No
matter how bad the situation is, it is always best for the parents to not
display their conflicts in front of their child. Even if in the end the
conflict is resolved, there will already be a hole/stain in the child's heart
that may give a deep sense of insecurity to the child's life. Worse yet, that
insecurity may still linger even after the child became an adult and is trying
to build their own family. To be honest, even when you became an adult,
watching your parents fight is never a good thing. So a young child watching it
is definitely much worse.
Anyway, for this song I translated
the word ‘hilang’ in two ways. One is ‘lost’ and another is ‘missing’. Though
‘lost’ and ‘missing’ have different meanings from each other, the word ‘hilang’
can mean both of these words depending on how it is used. As can be seen from
the first line of the song, ‘hilang’ is used to mean that she has made herself disappeared
when she was chasing after him/her. In other words, she loses herself. It’s the
same in the third line when she said her life disappears or is gone. So, I don’t
think I can convey the meaning accurately if I translate the lines as ‘my own
self/life becomes missing.’ I don’t even know if I’m explaining this correctly
haha. Anyway, in the last line she used ‘hilang’ to say that she was missing
from that person’s life, love and everything. So basically, it’s a simple play
on the word ‘hilang’ as it means to disappear or something is gone from its original
or designated place.
All in all, this song is actually quite easy to translate
because of how short the sentences in each line are and the lyricist mostly
uses simple words to convey her intended meaning. This turned out to be quite
an essay.. Sorry about that hahaha.
